Sheppey Cluster (Standford Hill)

The Sheppey Cluster is an amalgamation of the three establishments; Elmley, Standford Hill, and Swaleside.


Standford Hill is on the site of an ex Royal Air Force station.


The prison was first used in 1950, but the current accommodation was built in 1986.


The prison holds category D sentenced male adults.

Operational capacity: 462 as of 25th July 2008


Reception criteria: Category D, any sentence, maximum of 5 years to release and a maximum of 2 years to parole eligibility date.


Regime: Prisoners are employed in the workshop, works, and horticulture departments. There are also full and part time education classes for prisoners and there is a listener scheme for prisoners who may be at risk from suicide or self harm.
