Reading

HMP&YOI Reading is a small prison of Victorian design. It was built in 1844 on the site of a former small jail.


In 1973 Reading was designated as a local prison and in 1992 was re-roled as a Remand Centre and Young Offenders Institution, holding prisoners between the ages of 18 and 21 years.

Operational Capacity: 297 as of 27th October 2006


Accommodation: Mixture of single and double accommodation cells contained on three Victorian style wings and a further residential unit of single cells which are used for the Kennet Unit.


Reception criteria: Remand and convicted young offenders.
