A Victorian built prison built in 1853 receiving remand and convicted prisoners, mainly from East and West Sussex Courts.

Operational capacity: 723 as of 8th August 2008


Reception criteria: Male only, convicted and remand, adult and local remand young offenders - no provision for sentenced young offenders.


Accommodation: The majority of cells are shared, some single accommodation. New house block opened in April 2008 that comprises 174 single cells.


Regime: First Night Centre, Listener Scheme, range of full and part time education including IT, literacy, numeracy, life/social skills. Employment in workshops. Job club. Housing Advice.
