Hindley

HMP and YOI Hindley opened in 1961 becoming a youth custody centre in 1983. In April 2009 Hindley became a dedicated centre for offenders under the age of 18. Hindley is now the largest under 18 establishment in the country.

Reception Criteria: We accept Young People (15-18) who are on remand or sentenced. Young people who are serving an IPP sentence are also accepted.


Accommodation: The site has seven units (Alder, Beech, Cedar, Dove, Elm, Fir and Juniper), Beech unit provides accommodation for 15 year olds, Juniper is the designated first night and induction unit and Elm unit accommodates the remanded young people. Juniper also has en suite facilities. Alder and Beech units have recently been refurbished with Cedar and Dove units to be completed next. Hindley also has a complex needs unit for young people requiring more intensive interventions.


Regime: Hindley is a combined establishment with a regime that endeavours to provide positive opportunities for young people to gain qualifications and to address offending behaviour, whilst aiding them to reintegrate into society on their release. Regime provision includes learning and skills, workshop places including construction skills and physical education. Hindley also operates a listener and peer support scheme for those who may be at risk of suicide or self harm.  Hindley has an in-patient healthcare facility and a mental health day care centre.
