A former Naval Base, HMYOI Wetherby was introduced into the Prison System in 1958 as a Borstal. Since that time there have been many changes in its role from an open Youth Custody Centre, to a closed Youth Custody Centre, to its current role as a dedicated Male Juvenile Centre housing 360 trainees aged between 15 & 17 years.

Accommodation: All living accommodation is in single occupancy cells. The living accommodation is split into 6 living units housing 60 trainees on each. There are two brick built units that were built in the 1970's and 4 “quick build” ready to use units that were erected in 1997.

Reception Criteria: Sentenced Trainees – Receive juvenile trainees serving a Detention & Training Order Sentence of up to 2 years direct from sentencing courts within the catchment area of Humberside, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and designated areas of Lancashire and Greater Manchester. Trainees who come from outside of this catchment area will normally only be received with prior arrangement through the Youth Justice Board “Clearing House”.
By prior arrangement with Section 53.2/91 Unit at HQ to receive sentenced juveniles serving less than 4 years. There are arrangements to receive sentenced juveniles serving more than 4 years.
Unsentenced Trainees – Receive juvenile unsentenced trainees whom are remanded into custody by courts from within the above catchment area.
