Opened in March 1993 as a Remand Centre/Young Offender Institution.
The establishment's capacity was increased when a new residential unit was opened in June 1996.
In May 2001 Buttermere and Windermere Units were re-roled to dedicated Juvenile Units (Under 18's).
The establishment was re-roled during 2008/09 and is now the sole dedicated Young Offender Institution for the North West.

Accommodation: Mainly single cells with some doubles.
Reception criteria: HMYOI Lancaster Farms is a dedicated closed YOI establishment with four main residential units housing young adults (aged 18-21). The young adults are predominantly convicted prisoners with many remand/unconvicted. There is a small population of IPP prisoners.
Regime: Activities include Learning & Skills, Workshops (including Painting & Decorating, Building Operations, Joinery, Multi-skills, Arts, IT, Catering, Motor vehicle and Waste Management), Horticulture, Farms & Gardens, Industrial Cleaning, Hospitality and Physical Education.
A range of Offending Behaviour Programmes is offered, including Enhanced Thinking Skills, Short Duration Drugs Programme, PASRO, CALM (anger management), Alcohol Free Life and others.
Several partners are on-site, including Lancashire Probation Service, Lancaster & Morecambe College, North Lancashire NHS Trust, CXL, Jobcentre Plus, Lifeline, SOVA, YMCA and Barnardo's. We also work with the British Red Cross and the Prince's Trust.
