Canterbury prison sits close to the city centre, holding Foreign National prisoners serving up to 5 years with an expectation of removal.
The prison dates from 1808 when a county gaol was built just outside the city limits. The front of the prison still bears the carved inscription 'House of Correction'. During the First World War the prison was used as a Home Office archive, later becoming a prison and a Naval Detention Centre.
