Deerbolt is a purpose built Young Offenders Institution, which opened in 1973 built on a former Army Camp. It is situated on the outskirts of Barnard Castle in County Durham. In recognition of Deerbolt's historical links with the Army staff and prisoners renovated an ex-Army Personnel carrier and placed it as a ‘site guard' outside the main gate as part of the Millennium celebrations.
Deerbolt is a Category C Training Prison and caters for approximately 500 prisoners between the ages of 18 – 21, generally serving sentences up to 4 years in length.

Reception criteria: Deerbolt would ordinarily accommodate prisoners from the North East of England and Humberside serving up to a maximum of 4 years. (Up to 5 years provided in last 12 months- to be discussed with Duty Governor) Longer sentences (in last 12 months) – to be discussed with Governor or Deputy). Sec 53/2 should have a Movement Order. Prisoners with outstanding or further court appearances not accepted without prior discussion with Duty Governor.
