Acklington

HMP Acklington is a Category C prison for convicted adult male prisoners. This former RAF station, situated near to the small town of Amble in Northumberland, was acquired by the Prison Service in 1971 and the prison opened in 1972. Alongside its neighbour, HMYOI Castington, it is the most northerly establishment in the country.

Acklington was audited in April 2009 and achieved 86% for Standards Audit and 88% National Security Framework.

Operational Capacity: 946 on the 12th August 2008


Reception Criteria: Category C Sentence – any Lifers as allocated by Lifer Management Unit.

Accommodation: 11 living units of various design.

Regime


Activities: PICTA (Main & VP), Contract Services (Main & VP), Woodwork, Tailors, Textiles, Industrial cleaning, retail workshops, Engineering workshop, Painting & Decorating, Bricklaying, Amenity Gardens, Market Gardens, Laundry, Education, Physical Education, Waste Management, Kitchen – all include accredited qualifications.


Healthcare: No full time Medical Officer, no in-patients.  An Intesive Drug Treatment Scheme (IDTS) has been introduced. 


Accredited Offending Behaviour programmes: Sex Offender Programmes, Thinking Skills Programme, STOP (Substance Treatment & Offending Programme), and Healthy Relationships.
