The fifth annual Sustainable Development Report, covering the period April 2006 to March 2007 has been published.
The report covers progress made by both the Prison Service and Custodial property in addressing its commitments, aims and targets regarding sustainable development. Some of the achievements identified in the report include:
- Piloting of inter-seasonal and ground source heat in new building projects
- Meeting or exceeding more demanding targets for waste management and recycling
- Continuing to reduce the consumption of water and electricity per cubic metre despite increasing prison population
- Rolling out the Prison Service Environment Manual across the remainder of the Areas
- Achieving Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) ‘excellent' or ‘very good' in all new construction of house blocks
As Prison Service Director General Phil Wheatley and NOMS Chief Executive Helen Edwards say in the joint foreword: “The work of the Prison Service has again been recognised and won awards and we are proud that HMPS operational staff, supported by Custodial Property expertise and advice, have tried to integrate sustainability into their busy schedules with so much success.
“The Ministry of Justice Organisational Review will present new challenges as NOMS and the headquarters of HM Prison Service merge, not least in the development of a coherent sustainable development strategy across the many and diverse constituent parts of the new structure. We are committed to playing a full part in this and sharing our experiences of what makes a difference.”
