HM Prison Service's award winning Procurement team is widely regarded as one of the most successful in the public sector. We were the first central Government department to receive accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.
In 2007, our Head of Procurement Vincent Godfrey was name CIPS Management Professional of the Year and the Group was shortlisted in ‘Most improved purchasing operation - step change'. This builds on earlier success. In 2004 we won the Best Public Procurement Project at the prestigious Supply Management awards and were a finalist in 2005.

Case Studies
Sustainability
When 68 prison kitchens needed refurbishment at a cost of £5million, the sustainable disposal of existing equipment, with sale and re-use an objective, was built in to the strategy. HMPS worked with the MOD Disposal Sales Agency who arranged the removal, refurbishment and re-use of the equipment, with resulting income coming back to the Prison Service. Some of the equipment was refurbished for use in Army kitchens – also a great example of joined up Government.
Working in partnership
Developing strategic relationships with suppliers is high on the agenda. With Aramark, we have worked to involve prisoners in the selection and packing of goods provided by the supplier for sale in our prison shops. Many prisoners have earned NVQs as a result and have gone on to this type of work on release, while the project itself went on to win a CIPS award.
