Rt Hon David Hanson MP

Minister of State


David Hanson MP was appointed as Minister of State on 9 May 2007. He was appointed Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office on 9 May 2005.


He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 1997 to 1998. He was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales from 1999 and junior Government Whip from 1998 to 1999 and was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister from 2001.


He has overall responsibility for:

  • Oversight of criminal law
  • Prisons
  • Probation
  • Sentencing policy
  • Youth Justice
  • Northern Ireland Court Service
  • Industrial relations

Maria Eagle MP

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State


Maria Eagle MP was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State on 29 June 2007.


She was previously Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office, Department for Education and Skills, and Department for Work and Pensions.



Her responsibilities are:

  • Lead on criminal law
  • Support on prisons, probation, and sentencing policy
  • HM Courts Service
  • Criminal Justice
  • Office for Criminal Justice Reform
  • Support to Lord Hunt on legal aid.
